REVIEW: 2Elfth Night, Edinburgh Fringe 2019 ★★★★☆

How many actors do you need to make a Shakespeare play? Two, as it turns out, along with a willing cast of audience participants. Comedic duo Keane and Doyle tackle Twelfth Night (or, rather, 2Elfth Night, a pun I only truly got just before beginning writing this review) in superb clownish fashion. The interplay and chemistry between Keane and Doyle is tremendously fun; sure, they’re an established duo by this point, having been performing together since January 2017, but strong interactions aren’t necessarily a guarantee at the Fringe.

Indeed, each are accomplished actors in their own right, weaving between a wide variety of characters effortlessly while being funny in the process. They also do a good job of bringing the audience on side, although there’s the risk that the show would not work as well with a less willing crowd (one person actually knew the story of Twelfth Night and some of the dialogue, a rare treat). That being said, Keane and Doyle are such fun performers that perhaps this won’t be an issue.

Overall, 2Elfth Night is a unique and engaging hour of fun. It’s suitable for all ages, pretty much, and is positively unlike anything else you will see at this year’s Fringe: Shakespeare! But with clowns! And only two actors! Plus some of your favourite iconic songs, such as Bohemian Rhapsody and Wonderwall! What more could you ask for?

You can visit the 2Elfth Night at the Paradise in Augustines until August 25th (excl. August 18th).
