REVIEW: Darius Emadi: Mixtape, Adelaide Fringe 2025 ★★★☆☆

Mixtape is a 40-minute sprint through the gently surreal world of Darius Emadi – a self-proclaimed romantic hero chasing love, fame, and eternal glory. Equipped with basketballs, breakdancing, flying carpets, and the occasional shark, Emadi delivers a high-energy late-night show full of playful chaos and unexpected charm.

The text itself, often at times, feels like it’s held together by sheer charisma rather than narrative logic, but that’s part of the show’s appeal. Emadi is a captivating, agile performer who thrives in the unpredictable terrain of live audience interaction. The show is at its most delightful when the New York-based clown connects with his audience, when Emadi’s natural warmth and ease creates an inviting atmosphere which opens possibilities of play. Reading the room with care, he responds in real time to turn even the smallest interaction into something joyful and shared.

What’s especially rewarding is the way these moments are subtly woven back into the show. Early audience contributions reappear later as playful callbacks, giving the performance a satisfying sense of continuity. They serve as a gentle reminder that behind the spontaneity lies a thoughtful and attentive performer, gently steering our experience.

Mixtape sits comfortably in its late-night slot at The Gallery in The Courtyard of Curiosities. There’s a dreamlike, at times unhinged quality to these forty minutes, a sense that anything could happen – and often does. This liminal energy works to Emadi’s advantage, allowing the show to lean fully into the bizarre without needing to resolve every thread. What we get is a wild, affectionate, gloriously messy ride from a performer with an instinctive understanding of live performance and a big, beating clown heart. Emadi balances romantic idiocy with a genuine hunger for connection and a big dream, holding the room irresistible charm.

It’s not exactly a polished piece, and it doesn’t try to be. Instead, Mixtape is a spirited, affectionate lesson in clown – a show that celebrates risk, presence, and the magic of live performance. Here, Emadi balances boldness with sincerity, inviting us to join him in the game.

Recommended drink: Gatorade and Vodka – electrolytes and chaos; the taste of reckless ambition.

Performances of Mixtape have now concluded at Adelaide Fringe 2025.
